About the event

Please join us for our 3rd Annual Homeschool Art Show. It will be an evening of art exhibitions in many forms, created by our talented homeschool students of Upstate South Carolina. There will be music, special guests who will be teaching us many aspects of sustainable living here in the upstate, and our artists will be individually invited to the microphone, to present their work to the audience. A professional photographer will also be available to take family holiday sessions, and we'll have food trucks available, with dinner and beverages available for purchase. More to come!

This special evening will be from 5:00-8:00 at Red Dutch Barn in Greer (https://www.dutchbarnsc.com) on Thursday, September 21.

This year’s theme is …. SUSTAINABILITY!

We're going to have different areas set up at The Red Dutch Barn, for students to exhibit 4 CATEGORIES OF ART:

Student Artists are invited to exhibit in one or more of the 4 categories above (up to 3 entries per student). As usual, students will be invited to come up to the microphone to present their art to all the guests during the show.

CATEGORY 1: Canvas Art Using ONLY Natural Materials

Students can bring a canvas (up to 11" x 17") and decorate it using only organic materials. Please use flowers, petals, seeds, grasses, bark, natural dyes, natural glues, etc. Much like the Rose Parade floats on New Year's Day, these should be all-natural.

Want to take this a step further? Think about making the paper, and then stretching it onto frame (to make your own canvas). Making the canvas yourself is not a requirement.

CATEGORY 2: Upcyling | Reimagine a purpose for an item/items that would have otherwise been thrown away.

The sky is the limit. Make any type of machine/statue/craft/household item you would like out of recycled materials.

CATEGORY 3: Biodegradable Garden Boxes (arrangements of flower, veggies, herbs planted into a cardboard box). The goal is for these boxes to be planted in your home gardens after the show. We actually recommend putting worms in the soil to help them decompose in your garden faster. Please use THIS box from Walmart. When these boxes are displayed right next to each other at the Art Show, they’ll  have a living quilt effect.

CATEGORY 4: “Imagine a Sustainable Future” (a collection of photographs, digital art, blue prints, watercolors, charcoals, sculptures, maps, robots made of boxes, paper mache, etc. which represent whatever you imagine that a more sustainable future could look).

Some ideas are: regenerative farming, eco-friendly housing or new ways to live, automobiles, vacationing and eco-tourism, eating, bicycling, visions of the forests, renewable energy sources, etc. etc. etc.)

MAKE GREENVILLE GREENER (makegvlgreener.com) has offered to host  a "Trash-ion Show" which is just a fun name for a runway fashion show, but wearing recycled/repurposed materials (made of scrap materials, recycled materials, misc. repurposed items, items from thrift shops, reimaginings of past Halloween costumes, fabric from clothing they've outgrown, etc. This is an alternative to "fast fashion" and will provide such a fun opportunity for the students to rock a look they made themselves!

With SOO many creative kiddos in this group, and Halloween not long after the show, we thought it would be SO MUCH fun to make Halloween the theme of our fashion show! We'd love for the kiddos to CREATE THEIR OWN COSTUME!

If your child likes to sew, they could consider sewing their costume! By the way, we've had some generous parents in this group offer to host a sewing party and teach our kiddos how to sew!  BUT if sewing isn't their thing, it's totally fine for them to use fabric glue, hot glue guns, etc. They could also take a costume they already have, and maybe add wings to it, or make a mask, or any other idea they can dream up!

To stick with the Art Show theme of "Sustainability" please try to repurpose fabrics, use scraps, use outfits they've grown out of, shop for pieces at thrift shops, and make choices that would be more environmentally-friendly than buying a costume online!

NOTE: Make Greenville Greener can provide scrap fabric, if needed.
